Aloha, Bookworms!
It’s Tuesday again (where does the time go?!) The ladies of The Broke and the Bookish have offered up another fun topic for this week’s listy goodness. It may be hard to believe, but we book bloggers occasionally do things other than read. Today we’re talking about our favorite movies and TV shows, though I’m going to try and keep things bookish because I like a challenge. Shall we?
1. Gilmore Girls– This has been off the air for years, but I’m still a huge fan. Rory Gilmore is the coolest bookworm to ever grace the small screen and the rapid fire banter is endlessly entertaining. The quirky small town characters are hilarious. I own all 7 seasons on DVD and it will never get old. Never, I tell you!
2. Game of Thrones– The hubs and I have been binge watching this show and I know I’m going to go through withdrawal the minute we finish. I have read all the books, but it’s been so long I’ve forgotten a lot of the details. It’s been really fun to relive it, and point of the differences I can recall between the books and the show. Hubs and I took the quiz to find out our professions if we lived in Westeros. I was a noble. He was a whore.Β He’s taken to calling me Tyrion, which is pretty sweet, because he’s the best character. I guess that makes Hubs Shae. I cannot stop giggling!
3. The Pillars of the Earth– Starz did a mini series of this novel (review) and I thought it was fantastic. It didn’t hurt that Eddie Redmayne played Jack (hello, gorgeous!)
4. Fried Green Tomatoes– I saw this movie ages before I read the book. Things are quite a bit different, book to movie, but they are both so well done that it’s hard to take issue with it. I love them both on their own merits.
5. The Walking Dead– I really just need to read the doggone comics already (I say this ALL THE TIME and haven’t done it yet… Though I did read one of TWD’s novels, so I’ve got that going for me…) This show was my gateway drug into the zombie genre and I haven’t looked back… Well. I’ve looked back to make sure I’m not being followed by zombies, but that’s about it.
6. Little Women– Little Women is one of my all time favorite novels, but I have always loved the 1994 movie version. I’ve seen it more times than I can count (it was a slumber party favorite for my BFF and I) and it never fails to bring me back.
7. Outlander– Okay, it’s not out yet, but I’m verra excited and cautiously optimistic. I’m putting my faith in Starz because Diana Gabaldon has been involved with the production AND they did a stellar job withΒ The Pillars of the Earth.Β
I’m throwing in the towel at seven. I think that’s sufficient for today. What about you, bookworms? What are some of your favorite bookish TV shows and/or movies?

I am also beside myself waiting for the Starz Outlander series! The books are always better than the tv/movie versions, but here are a few movies and book series that I love:
Harry Potter
Lord of the Rings
Hobbit
Chronicles of Narnia.
Words For Worms
I very nearly included Harry Potter, but I didn’t love all of the movies as fervently as I loved the books. I mean, I KNEW the books would always be better, but some of the movies were just okay for me. Still a Potterhead to the end, though.
Quirky Chrissy
The only ones on your list I haven’t seen?
The Pillars of the Earth
Outlander.
I know.
I’m so ashamed.
Words For Worms
Uh, why are you ashamed? Pillars of the Earth was on Starz as a mini series a few years back. It didn’t get the publicity of the other shows. And Outlander isn’t even out yet! π
Quirky Chrissy
The books. I haven’t read the books. I’m ashamed mostly for Outlander. Because you gush.
Jennine G.
TV was hugely limited at my house growing up so I’ve never seen Gilmore Girls. But I have plenty of friends who tell me to and one friend who owns the series! That was going to be my summer project, but I’ve been reading so much instead!
Words For Worms
Tough call, reading vs. binge watching good shows. I must admit, Game of Thrones has beaten out books for me a few times this summer. Luckily we’re finished, so hopefully I can get back on track!
thatashgirl
Am I the only one that thinks Eddie Redmayne is funny looking? Don’t get me wrong, I love a good ginger but there’s something about him that bugs me.
Megan M.
No, you are not the only one. I don’t get the swooning. I love a ginger, myself, but he just… isn’t cute to me. *shrugs*
Words For Worms
I like Eddie Redmayne, but I get what you’re saying. From certain angles I find Rob Pattinson strange looking.

It’s like you were reading my mind with this list. I absolutely loved Gilmore Girls and was so sad when ABC Family stopped airing it at 5 pm each weekday. Fannie Flagg’s books are also awesome! Fries Green Tomatoes and Standing in the Rainbow are on my “feel good” book list.
Words For Worms
Fannie Flagg is my happy place! I always feel better about humanity reading one of her books!
Jancee
I really like Gilmore Girls, although I’ve only seen about 1 season. I also like Sherlock. So good!
Words For Worms
I’ve not seen any Sherlock, I’m so behind the times!
Carrie
Great list. I should re-watch Little Women. I’d kind of forgotten about it, but I LOVED it at the time.
I’m a sitcom freak, so my Top Ten list this week consists of my favorite 80s & 90s sitcoms: http://otherwomensstories.blogspot.com/2014/07/top-ten-tuesday-80s-90s-sitcoms.html
Words For Worms
I like to watch it at Christmas time :).
Monika @ Lovely Bookshelf
The Walking Dead made my list, too! π I really need to watch that version of Little Women.
Words For Worms
It’s lovely, though my opinion may be clouded by nostalgia.
Andi (@estellasrevenge)
I miss TV. Netflix gets us by (and keeps me from losing hours on end), but I do miss it sometimes.
Words For Worms
Yeah, TV can be a HUGE time suck!

Stardust is one of my favorite adaptations. I like the movie way more than the book. (I know, blasphemy. What can I say, I’m just not a big Gaiman fan.) Also, Under the Tuscan Sun. Again, I liked the movie better… but it’s a VERY loose interpretation, and memoirs just aren’t my thing.
Words For Worms
I’ve not seen or read Stardust. I saw the movie for Under the Tuscan Sun, but never read the book. I do like memoirs though, maybe I’ll give it a shot.
Megan M.
YES, Little Women! I love that movie, I don’t care what anyone says about Winona Ryder. Also the Walking Dead and Fried Green Tomatoes. I was watching GoT but it just got to be too much for me. (But I LOVED Tyrion something fierce.)
I really love the show “Longmire.” It’s based on a book series – but I haven’t read them yet. And I recently got to see the BBC/HBO production of “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” series and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and I’m super sad that they didn’t make more than one season.
Words For Worms
GOT gets very graphic with the violence, I can totally understand needing to back away. Seriously, though, I wish you could just watch the Tyrion scenes because Peter Dinklage is a hell of an actor, man!
Martine Frampton
Myself and my daughter still regularly have Gilmore Girls days, I know it’s not real but it makes me want to move to small town america:-)
Words For Worms
Stars Hollow is the best small town!
Loralie
I love Sherlock! I have read all of the short stories & novels, so it is fun to pick out the way they integrate the book elements in the series. Also, I could just listen to Benedict Cumberbatch’s voice all day & be happy. π
Words For Worms
Sounds like I really ought to jump on the Sherlock bandwagon, huh? π
Melody
Excited for Outlander as well!
Words For Worms
I will probably live tweet the premiere because I’m THAT big a nerd!
Jenny @ Reading the End
Awww, Gilmore Girls. Gilmore Girls is one of those shows I like to watch when I’m sick or distracted — it’s totally dependable at making me feel a little cheerier.
Words For Worms
So many great characters in that show. Paris always cracked me up. The banter, man. That’s where it’s at!
Joules (from Pocketful of Joules)
I love me some Gilmore Girls and was hardcore lobbying to use Lorelai as a girls name choice back when I was a preggo. Of course I have to throw in the Harry Potter movies and my new fav, Orange is the New Black (better than the book…oh yes, I just said that). Also, for a random one I’ve read and re-read Return to Oz (the one based on the 80’s/90’s movie) so many times the cover fell off.
Words For Worms
Haaaa! You know, I’ve only seen two episodes of Orange is the New Black, and I’ll admit, they made some good changes. Sticking too closely to the book would have made for a dull show, I really like what they did with it.
Alison (@AlisonCanRead)
I’m not a huge fan of Little Women the book (the ending was awful) but I loved that movie.
Words For Worms
Little Women (the book) will always have a special place in my heart. It’s one of the few books I’ve re-read, though I’ve heard a lot of people don’t love it the way they expected to.
Michelle
Some good choices!!
`Little Women` is always a good choice.
Words For Worms
I think so! You can’t go wrong with the March girls.
Trish
I had to do a double take when I saw Outlander. Optimist, huh? I go back and forth about Jamie–he looks so lovely on that poster but in real life I just can’t wrap my head around it. Buuuuut, still looking forward to it and think it’ll be one that I enjoy without the company of hub. π
I’m a sucker for Law and Order: SVU. Yup, still. Even though I miss Elliott.
Words For Worms
Ha! I know, the actor is gorgeous, but not quite the Jamie I imagined. Nor the Claire. I really hope I don’t have to eat my words!
Kim (Sophisticated Dorkiness)
I miss Gilmore Girls! I’m going to have to rewatch that series sometime soon, I think. I haven’t done that in a long time and it’s always just such a nice show.
Angie @Angela's Anxious Life
That is great that you included Outlander!!! LOLOL! This was one of my favorite weeks for Top Ten Tuesday. Probably because I love TV and Movies. I didn’t ever watch Pillars of the Earth though I did read the book.
AMB
I love Gilmore Girls! I miss it.
Leah @ Books Speak Volumes
Gilmore Girls is my all-time favorite show. It somehow never gets old, even though I’ve seen each episode too many times to count. And Little Women! I’ve never read the book, but the 1994 movie is one of my favorite movies — I finally just bought it on DVD, and I have a feeling my frequent watching of it is going to drive the boyfriend crazy π
Melinda
Gilmore Girls were an awesome show!! I’m so glad it’s on your list… on top π
