Howdy Bookworms!
I am the worst lately. I just can’t seem to motivate myself to write thoughtful, interesting reviews. BWAHAHAHAHA. Sorry, sorry. Thoughtful and interesting aren’t really my bag, are they? Ah well. Even when I’m not posting, I’m still devouring books in any number of formats. I’ve got some bite sized tidbits for y’all today on my recent audio book listening.
1. The Magician King
by Lev Grossman: This is the second installment in The Magicians
trilogy (review). It was enjoyable enough, as broody fantasy goes, but I’m legitimately puzzled by one thing. WTF is with Lev Grossman and foxes?! People transformed into foxes, fox deities… Bizzaro sexualization. I’m kind of worried about this guy.
2. Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist
by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan: I think I’m too old for this. I have absolutely no doubt that if this book had been released when I was a teenager, I would have ADORED it and declared it my soul mate made of words. There were still elements I really dug, but there were times I wanted to tell both these kids to quit taking themselves so seriously. GET OFF MY LAWN.
3. You Suck: A Love Story
by Christopher Moore: I had no idea this was a trilogy until I was almost finished with the book, but it was an entertaining and campy twist on the vampire genre. I couldn’t decide if I was amused or incredibly annoyed by the voice used for Abby Normal. It was soooo over the top crazy. Laugh or cringe? I simply do not know!
4. Matilda
by Roald Dahl: I know, I can’t believe I hadn’t read this before now either. While I found Matilda utterly charming as a character, I can’t help but wonder… WHAT HAPPENED IN YOUR CHILDHOOD, ROALD DAHL?! The grown ups are SO MEAN.
What have y’all been reading and listening to? I feel so out of the loop!

I didn’t actually read Matilda, or any of Roald Dahl’s books, until I was nearly an adult. I just love Matilda.
As for foxes, I heard celebrities recently talking about how their first “crush” as children involved cartoon characters, and Robin Hood (the fox version) was mentioned. Maybe Lev Grossman had a thing for Maid Marian.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I’ve had crushes on cartoon characters, but typically human ones. (Don’t you go pretending Flynn Rider isn’t a dreamboat!)

Did you listen to the Kate Winslet narration of Matilda? I’ve read Matilda a million times before, and just recently enjoyed it on audio, and found it absolutely perfect.

Yes it was the Kate Winslet version, and she did a brilliant job with it. Her kids are SO LUCKY when it comes to bedtime stories.

I did the same thing when I first listened to You Suck. I thought it was hilarious, but I wasn’t certain about the voice. Honestly, I tried listening to the sequel and just cannot get into it. Since I’ve also tried reading the sequel, I think it is just the story itself rather than the narration.

This is why I love Scribd so much. I don’t feel like I’m wasting credits when I get a dud of an audio book, you know?

I read Nick and Norah in high school/college, and I was annoyed that they got their Beatles trivia wrong. I Want to Hold Your Hand WASN’T their first single — Love Me Do was! (OK, Hold Your Hand was the first single released in America, but Love Me Do came out in the UK first.) It’s the little things. If you want me to believe you’re a music nerd, you need to get your facts right!

LOL! You are the best kind of nerd. I didn’t pick up on that tidbit at all, I don’t think I knew they released a different single in the UK first. Although, since we’re on the subject, George was my favorite Beatle. There. I said it.

Aw, Matilda! Your first time reading Matilda! That was the book my sister used to get me back on board with Roald Dahl after I saw five minutes of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and had nightmares for two weeks. By contrast, Matilda wasn’t scary at all. (Neither was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in fact. Stupid movie people.)

I read Matilda, but I don’t remember it very well. It’s been a long time! I’ll revisit it when my kids read it for the first time.

You Suck sounds interesting. And I need to get to The Magicians first, before I can even think about The Magician King. I just don’t know if I’ll like it. But I guess I just have to take the plunge!
