Stuff & Nonsense: A Shopping List For The Bookish

April 12, 2013 Uncategorized 46

Happy Friday Wormy Worms!

The internet is chock full of cool stuff you can buy. Sure, a lot of it is ridiculous and/or prohibitively expensive, but it’s fun to look at. Sooooo… Let’s go shopping for bookish nonsense!

carroll pillow

Yowza. That handsome devil on the throw pillow is Lewis Carroll. How much fun would this be in your living room? You can find these bad boys at Uncommon Goods, which is full of cool random stuff. They have an entire line of quirky literary throw pillows for all your decorating needs.

bigbookstote

I’ve seen this joke a zillion times, but I never get tired of it. The magic of Sir Mix-A-Lot and a tribute to chunkster books? Ooooh yeah. This baby can be purchased for a reasonable price at Cafepress, and I really want one!

origamiowlbooklocket

Okay. So. Origami Owl is like the new Tupperware. You know, the lady parties where you buy stuff you don’t really need and then feel guilty about it? I hate those things. But I don’t hate Origami Owl, because I think this locket is fabulous. It helps that I haven’t been invited to a party yet. You don’t HAVE to go to one of those parties to acquire this sweet locket, you can order them online with no sales pitch. I’d call that a big win for the antisocial.

litphonecase

Awwww yeah. You can get literary figures on your cell phone cases now. Just make sure you turn off the uh, “telltale” tone before the movie starts, mmmkay? I found this HERE. They have classic book covers too!

socksforworms

I don’t know about you, but I find plain white socks impossibly drab. My own sock drawer contains a lot of argyle, striped tube socks, and penguin socks of endless variety. But you know what it’s missing? These bookworm socks from The Sockmonster!

bookwormonesie

I’ve been going to a whole heck of a lot of baby showers lately, and now I know what the next baby on my list will be getting! Perhaps I’ll just buy one for myself for my eventual offspring. Cafepress is just too much fun. TOO MUCH!

bookcharmbracelet

Etsy, Etsy, Etsy! You lure me in with your delightful accessories, and then you make them bookish? I mean, COME ON! The letter charms are made out of typewriter keys. How am I supposed to resist this?!

bookmug

I like mugs. They hold all the warm beverages that go so nicely with books. I really dig this mug (which I found, again, on Cafepress) because this quote cracks me up. If memory serves, Aunt March said this about Jo in Little Women. Aunt March was such a cantankerous old biddy, and then she goes and leaves Jo Plumfield. I love it when the thorny ones have hearts of gold!

bookscarf

Who doesn’t love a scarf? Who doesn’t love Pride and Prejudice? This scarf is printed with Jane Austen’s delicious prose! Etsy, what are you DOING to me?!?!

bookpurse

BOOK PURSE! Seriously, how cool is this? It’s a book that’s a purse. You can hold your stuff inside a copy of Jane Eyre. Etsy, you are one saucy minx. If you weren’t an inanimate internet marketplace, I’d kiss you!

So Bookworms, anybody out there got booktastic items they’d like to share with the class?

I like the scarf, although I’m really not enamored of Pride and Prejudice, so the specifics don’t draw me, but I just really like the idea. Unfortunately, I look ridiculous if I try to wear something trendy like a scarf that’s not a “holy crap it’s freezing” kind of scarf.

    • Words for Worms

I used to think that, but then I just wore a scarf and said “to hell with whether or not I can pull this off.” Apparently that attitude is what makes one able to pull off a scarf. Fashion mystery: Solved.

  2. Kristin

Oh. My. Gawd. I LOVE this stuff. I need pretty much ALL of this!!!!!!!! You rock!
And I totally agree with the scarf phenomenon – you just have to pretend you look absolutely amazing in it, and you will. That’s it.

    • Words for Worms

I’m bummed that I didn’t order one for my sister’s shower! Of course, my nephew isn’t here yet, and I’m sure they come in a range of sizes. Muahahhahaha!

  3. JoulesDellinger

Geez Katie, you totally should have posted this BEFORE your birthday so we could all surprise you with awesome booky gifts! Obviously, I love the Origami Owl necklace and etsy regularly makes me her bitch.

    • Words for Worms

LOL I was just thinking that, but really, it’s nearly impossible to beat, oh, I don’t know, a box of magic, wonder, nailpolish, chapstick, and marshmallows, you know?!

  4. therelentlessreader

I want ALL of those things 😉 My mom made me a bitchin’ clock out of a gorgeous copy of Sense and Sensibility. It’s my favorite thing ever.

  5. Sarah Says Read

OMG those socks are THE BESTEST!!! I also really like fun socks – mine today are neon yellow and green and look like they have shoelaces tied up the front.

Also, I really wish Origami Owl made it’s way to my area! Never heard of it before, but it’d be so much funner to go to one of those jewelry parties…

    • Words for Worms

I only ever get invited to Pampered Chef parties and I really don’t like cooking so I’m just like… really? I’m seriously considering splurging on an Origami Owl locket. It’s so cute! (they have a zillion other charms too, not just the bookish ones.)

  6. Megan M.

I’ll take them all! I love the locket and charm bracelet. I love that Louisa May Alcott quote, too, but I don’t drink coffee and have little use for mugs. I just decided it would make an awesome tattoo, though, so problem solved! There you go solving problems I didn’t even know I had, Katie. You’re like a ninja therapist.

    • Words for Worms

You just helped me title my autobiography! Katie: From Armchair Freud to Ninja Therapist… With No Degrees or Oaths to Hinder Her! That is a FANTASTIC idea for a literary tattoo, you are brilliant!

What a fun list! The onesie is adorable! When I decide it’s time for kiddos, I will definitely *hint* to my friends that I absolutely need it. Some cute things I’ve found:

http://outofprintclothing.com/ – Shirts and other items of classic book jackets. I MAY have one or two or five or six items from here 🙂

http://bookriot.com/2013/01/25/the-best-coffee-mugs-for-book-lovers/ – Coffee mugs for book lovers. I almost got the “I like big books and I cannot lie” mug because it’s just so darn clever, but couldn’t justify spending the money on a mug since it comes all the way from Italy. But it’s so cute!

  8. Riley ST

Love the Jane Eyre Book purse! Never knew that literature/books can be presented in such a creative way. Thanks for blogging about this! I really enjoyed it.:)

  9. Milo

The Wife and I are having a baby in September and now I know exactly what we forgot to register for. Thank you for pointing out how horrible a father I really am…my shame knows no end…

The scarf is pretty swank as well, the Wife would enjoy that I imagine.

      • Milo

Boynton is the best for the little kids. That and that Seuss dude…:)

For my older boys we’ve recently picked up some of the Dragonbreath books by Ursula Vernon. My personal favorite is Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs. Check ’em out, you’ll dig ’em something fierce!

  10. Heather

I really wish Out of Print would make cases for the new iPhone, too. I can’t get literary faces for my phone and that makes me sad. 🙁

    I love the charm bracelet.

  11. loraliej

I love all of these things! I just saw these on The Mary Sue last week I think: spinelessclassics.net. Posters with the entire text of the book on the poster! I want one soooo bad….. they are very cool.

  12. Zen A.

I’m bookmarking this post and putting it in an obvious place for my fiancé to have a look at it. The charm bracelet and the necklace are a must have!

  13. CorrieP

So, I am a few days late to the party however…was perusing the website for Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville, IL and they sell a t shirt that says “my book club can drink your book club under the table.” Immediately thought of you, and thought it appropriate for this topic!!!
