Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts: June 9, 2016

June 9, 2016 Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts 20

Greetings Bookworms!

It’s been a while since I’ve updated you on all the goings on, so let’s catch up today, cool? We’re going to play my favorite game, Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts hosted, as always, by Christine of Bookishly Boisterous. So. What have I been up to?

bookishnotsobookish

ONE: I have been planting flowers and playing in the dirt as I do every year around this time. Subtlety is not on the agenda, folks, this year everything is BRIGHT and SHOWY. Also, I have a lot of blue flower pots. I love all of it, I tell you. ALL OF IT!

TWO: A couple of weeks ago, Hubs and I went to a small town fair. We have watched more than our fair share of episodes of Deep Fried Masters, so when we saw that deep fried butter was an option at one of the food carts? You bet your bottom dollar we tried it. It was fine, I guess, it didn’t seem quite like what the “masters” made on TV. It tasted like a hollow buttery funnel cake. So, if bragging rights aren’t important to you? Just go with a traditional funnel cake and call it a day.

THREE: We held a yard sale in an attempt to clear out some of the accumulated detritus of life. At one point, a woman showed interest in a desktop trinket but left without buying it or trying to bargain a lower price. I assumed she just changed her mind. Until she showed up about 20 minutes later, asking if I would be willing to barter said trinket for a set of fancy padded hangers and several packages of stickers. I passed on the hangers, but I totally accepted stickers as payment. Because OF COURSE I DID. They were Goosebumps stickers and Christmas stickers, I mean OBVIOUSLY I will have uses for them. An excellent deal if I do say so myself.

These are my flowers. FLOWERS!

These are my flowers. FLOWERS!

FOUR: Last year when we held our garage sale, I managed to give myself a really weird sunburn thanks to poorly applied spray on sunscreen. This year I was diligent about sunscreen application and I used the lotion variety which is harder to miss spots with. All was well. Except. I forgot that I have bangs now. And that even when my hair is in a ponytail, I have a part. I sunburned the crap out of my scalp. Just another reason I should make a move on this life goal of mine to wear jaunty hats on the regular. You know who doesn’t sunburn her scalp? The lady in the jaunty hat, that’s who!

FIVE: It’s no secret that I’ve been running way behind schedule with book reviews these days, so I’m SUPER STOKED that the Andi of Estella’s Revenge is running a REVIEWATHON next week. This is the motivation I’ve been missing, you guys. I’m highly susceptible to peer pressure.

SIX: Have y’all been watching Game of Thrones? How much are you LOVING little Lady Mormont? That pint sized potentate stole my heart. LYANNA MORMONT FOR THE IRON THRONE!

There we are Bookworms! You’re now up to date with all the goings on in the land of Katie. What have y’all been up to?

Oh they had better not kill off Lady Mormont and her 62 Bear Island warriors or I’ll riot, I tell you! They also better not kill off Yara because I kind of love her right now.

Your flower pots are adorable to match your adorable house. I would have taken those stickers, too. We watched the Goosebumps movie last weekend, which was pretty great, and the girls have been watching the old Goosebumps show on Netflix. I wasn’t super into the books as a kid but I read a ton of Fear Street. Sunscreen is the worst – there’s always somewhere you’ve missed. If it isn’t your scalp, it’s your ears, or some random spot on your leg where you thought you covered everything but you didn’t. I love the idea of those powder sunscreens but all the ones I’ve found are pretty expensive for how quickly I imagine you’d run through them.

I love your flowers! And I feel you on the sunburned scalp; how does one even apply sunscreen to the part?! I should probably get on the hat train as well.

Yesss Lyanna for the throne! Such a bad-ass.

Right? Like, let me slather my clean hair with this gross lotion and look all greasy? Hats. Hats for everyone! I have my eye on a Ravenclaw baseball cap. It may need to happen sooner than later.

First: the flowers are wicked beautiful.

Second: your parted-hair sunburn story is like a well-timed PSA. I Just Added “Jaunty Hat” To My Packing List For An Upcoming Trip. (I’ll try to remember to thank you later, when I’m basking in unburnt glory.)

Scalp sunburns SUCK. That and the tops of your ears. Brutal.

Loving Game of Thrones this season so much. Lady Mormont is badass.

You need a floppy straw hat so you seem like a proper gardener and then I need pictures.

Gorgeous flowers…and your yard sale made me remember the last one I had, just before moving into my downsized space. I had a little guest house next to the main house, and I filled it with goodies…so nothing was actually in the yard. It was the most fun I’d had in the whole moving process.

I do enjoy how people like to barter.

Thanks for sharing…and here’s MY BOOKISH THURSDAY POST

I love those bright blue pots hanging off your railing!

And trading a trinket for stickers is an awesome decision, I must say. I’m going to go check out Andi’s reviewathon – I’m not super behind, I only have 2 to write at the moment, but I’m really struggling with one of them. Maybe this will get me to sit down and get straight what I want to say.

    Have a great weekend!! 🙂

Ah, yes, well do I know the problem of a sunburned scalp. The problem for me is that I like getting sun in my hair — I’m the weird adult whose hair stayed blonde (I mean, it’s darkened obviously from when I was a kid but it’s still clearly blonde hair), and I like to take advantage of sun time when I can? And hats kind of mess up that whole situation. Apparently there’s some kind of powder sunscreen that can go on your scalp, but as soon as I learned it existed, the FDA banned it because I guess it’s really super bad for your skin. ALAS.

(Luckily I look amazing in hats.)

Man, I’m jealous. The blonde highlights in my hair don’t come cheap. I’m glad that you look amazing in hats though, because I think we need to start a hat revolution. HATS!

Scalp sunburns are no joke! I know when I first but my hair short, I had to pay attention to my ears. Those are also not fun when burned!
