Howdy Bookworms!
It’s time again for my disjointed thoughts on random things, otherwise known as Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts hosted, as always, by Christine at Bookishly Boisterous. Here are some of the things that have been floating around my head this week…
1. Hubs recently uncovered one of my high school journals and has taken to doing dramatic readings of some of the more angsty passages. It’s not even flowery overwrought prose, it’s mostly histrionics of the soulless-ness of unnamed people. Obviously it was VERY SERIOUS despite the fact that I have absolutely no recollection as to what it was about. A boy? A fight with a friend? A teacher? I honestly have no idea. It’s like I vague-booked pre Facebook. It also reminds me that I’m intensely grateful that social media didn’t exist until I was (mostly) a grown up. I used to think I should keep all those journals for posterity, but right now I kind of just want to burn them all.
2. I’m going dress shopping this weekend because one of my besties is getting hitched. I take my Matron of Honor duties VERY SERIOUSLY… Mostly in that I promise not to complain that I’m going to be wearing a very bright shade of pink in this wedding. Speaking of bridesmaid dresses though, I cannot seem to get rid of mine. It’s not like I will ever have occasion (or desire) to wear them again, and yet I haven’t gotten rid of any of them. I’m guessing this will be the last wedding I’m asked to stand up in, so maybe I will be able to part with them once my bridesmaiding days are officially behind me. Or maybe I’ll just continue to let my closet be dominated by brightly colored satin.
3. I voted in the primaries on yesterday. My polling place was changed from where it’s been forever- I was given ample warning on this, so no worries. BUT. The new place is much further from my house. Boo. Also, they had no stickers! I heard the same thing last time I voted, at the old polling place. No stickers. They always say “yet” as though someone will be dropping them off later in the morning, but really? Dude, they’re stickers. Can those not arrive in advance with the rest of the polling stuff? Couldn’t the election judges bring them along? Does that strike anyone else as weird? Is my voting precinct not good enough for your stickers?! All kidding aside, I voted. Even though I have ZERO desire to engage in political discussions on the internet, I do care.
4. Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day. I put a reminder into my phone so I wouldn’t forget to wear green this year… Speaking of St. Patrick’s Day, last year I participated in Trish’s A Day In The Life event by logging the ins and outs of a random day and I plan to do so again this year. St. Patrick’s Day ended up being the day I logged last year so I’ll probably do that again, for comparison purposes. I imagine they will be shockingly similar, EXCEPT that this year I won’t have to go on an emergency green run. I hope. (Read last year’s post HERE if you’re interested.)
5. My thoughts tend to skew toward the not-so-bookish, don’t they? In bookish news, I’m juggling a trio of books. I’m working through The Walking Dead: Compendium Three

Also, you should use said bridesmaid dresses for Halloween. I did that with one of mine. I’ve also reworn the other two in my closet. 🙂

Hahaha! He was not wearing a turtleneck, but he did buy some fair trade coffee recently, so there’s a good chance that’s what he was drinking.

I’ve only ever been a bridesmaid once and liked my dress (I helped pick them out…). However fingers-crossed that I get to be a matron of honor for one of my sisters! =)

I have five dresses. This will be #6. My sister ended up getting married at the courthouse so didn’t have a bridal party, but she asked me to speak at the reception so I’m sort of counting it. I got to pick out the dress myself though, so I don’t count it in my stack o’ satin. It is a cute dress though. I should bust that out more often.

You have to renew your library card? For a public library? That seems crazy. I have had mine for like 15 years and haven’t had to do a thing to keep it. It does remind me that I want to ask for a new physical card though. Mine is cracking with age and overuse. 🙂

YES! It’s actually really sad. Our area is officially sectioned off into smaller townships and stuff, thus under smaller library systems (or none at all, SOB.) I am luckily within the official big library’s jurisdiction. I think they do it so they can check and make sure you haven’t moved out of district. Which seems pretty crappy, TBH. I think they charge those out of area. I dunno. I’m sure there’s some political budgeting reason, seeing as Illinois is perpetually ridiculous in that regard.

I work at a public library and I can tell you why we, at least, make people renew their accounts. It’s so we can make sure we have accurate contact info — which people NEVER think to update at the library — in case we ever have to get in touch with them about something, like long-overdue items that are going to billed status. And we have to call at least a handful of people a day to tell them they forgot to put the DVD or audiobook disc back in the case they returned. 🙂
I’m pretty sure my husband would mock me endlessly if he ever got hold of my teenage journals! Thank goodness they’re stashed away in a box somewhere.

Oh — I should mention we call people for nicer things too. Like just the other day a patron left his wallet at the circ desk!

This is SO good to hear! Here I was assuming the worst and it’s probably just overdue fees and lost wallets :). See that, inner pessimist?! Shame on you.

Lord in heaven. I want to shake my teenage self. But if I hadn’t been that teenage self, I wouldn’t be the current me. I take comfort in the idea that everyone was ridiculous as a teenager.

Oh my gosh, you are BRAVE letting your hubby read aloud passages from your old journals. I wouldn’t be able to stand it! LOL And yes, sooooo glad social media wasn’t around when I was that age.

Yeah it wasn’t so much “let” as that he found one in a pile of old paperwork. I’d only filled out the first page though, thank goodness. He didn’t have a ton of material to work with.

Oh I so agree on number one. I was a diary keeper too. If FB had existed when I was in high school I would’ve highly embarrassed myself. And, voting in Ohio yesterday too – on the Ides of March, no less. Ah Shakespeare.

I have brand new St. Patricks socks to wear tomorrow. I should to the Day in the Life thing but I keep forgetting about it until mid morning. I’m hopeless.

OMG! I would absolutely hate to have anything I wrote in high school read by anyone….
As for bridesmaids’ dresses…I had four or five of those awful things around after my various friends got married, varying from pastel pink, blue, yellow, etc., to a deep and ugly teal in a stiff fabric. I think it’s a curse some brides put on their friends so they won’t outshine the bride. Ha.
Now MY bridesmaids had lovely and elegant floor-length dresses in a deep jade green…LOL.

I would DIE if my husband read my high school journals. In fact if anyone read them… probably if I read them again 😀 I didn’t keep a diary religiously but there were times when I did – not even sure where they are but I do recall finding them about 15 years ago, flicking through and being MORTIFIED by what I’d written – such drama!

Being a teenager is such a weird experience. You really have no idea what’s worth getting upset about, so absolutely EVERYTHING feels dire. In hindsight, of course, its mortifying!

I love “I voted!” stickers! I have only gotten one once, and I loved it and felt so proud of myself. It was when I early-voted though (for governor of Louisiana! an election where the outcome I wanted was, for once, the outcome we got!). I’ve never ever gotten one of those stickers at my regular polling station.
