It Ain’t Easy (Not) Being Green: A Day In the Life

Top O’ the Morning to You Bookworms!

One of my favorite bloggers, Trish of Love, Laughter, and a Touch of Insanity, announced an event recently encouraging bloggers to document a day in their lives. It’s an opportunity for book bloggers to show that there’s more to us than just reading. How much more, I can’t really say, but definitely a little bit more. Like, I don’t know, 11% more. Or something. Lucky for y’all, I decided to document St. Patrick’s Day, and it turned out to be the most eventful ordinary day I’ve had in a good long time. Are you ready?!

Day-in-the-Life-Event

7:18 am: Woke up after 2 dalliances with snooze button.

7:27 am: Got in shower. I may or may not have fallen asleep on the toilet. Judge lest not ye be judged!

7:45 am: Left for work.

7:47 am: Realized it was St. Patrick’s Day and I had forgotten to wear green. Seriously, Katie? Your last name is Kelly! What kind of an impostor Irish woman are you?

8:16 am: Arrived at work.

8:20 am: I was shamed by co-worker for lack of green. I deserved it.

9:01 am: I drank some #ToffeeCoffee (ie, coffee with Heath flavored creamer, which is my current obsession. Mostly because it rhymes and I made a fun hashtag.)

9:58 am: Compared new art in boss’s office to the Eye of Horus. Had to explain to boss that I had Egypt on the brain thanks to having just finished reading Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff (review). It could be worse. I could be my husband who refers to the AT&T building in Nashville as “The Eye of Sauron.” (I think Sauron might be somehow responsible for the God awful traffic we were stuck in for 2 hours when we drove through last time. Boo.)

Okay, he may have a point. (Image Source)

11:00 am: I ate some butter toffee flavored almonds because I am all about the toffee and protein-rich snacks that curb the desire to gnaw off my own arm. I basically want to eat everything all the time. I’m still in winter mode where I become bearlike and want to do nothing more than eat all the things and hibernate.

12:05 pm: Left to pick up co-worker/pal/mother-of-dragons (Kathy) for lunch date from other office location. (Kidding, not mother of dragons. I mean, unless you think dragons RULE, which I kind of do. Her kidlets own my heart. #CrazyAuntKatie loves you!)

12:20 pm: Had lunch with Kathy at Noodles & Company because we both had coupons for free lunch. Holla! It’s the perk of the two of us both having March birthdays. I ate the Med Salad with Chicken, obvi. I simply cannot get enough olives and feta in my life. ALL THE SALTY!

12:50 pm: Stopped at Target so Kathy could pick up diaper rash ointment for my goddaughter’s tushie. While there, I purchased a cheap green scarf to allay my St. Pat’s guilt. I also bought a small bag of Cadbury Mini Eggs because I am a bear and those things are friggin delicious.

1:05 pm: Returned Kathy to her office. Visited Office Beagle. I’ve been missing him terribly since I moved into the new building. Just look at that face!

dayinthelife

2:36 pm: Vending machine maintenance guy came for repair. He sought me out and bought me a soda because he saw the email I sent to my boss explaining the broken machine (and the fact that the Diet Dr. Pepper was taunting me.) I can only assume he found my personification of soda amusing enough to warrant a freebie.

6:00 pm: Worked a bit late as I took a long lunch to visit Office Beagle. Changed for gym.

6:35 pm: Went to Body Combat class. Punching and kicking the air for an hour makes me feel like a badass. I know I would never get into a fight, let alone win one, but it’s excellent cardio and fools me into feeling powerful for an hour. Plus, it feels AWESOME to fake punch and kick things. Sometimes I imagine I am beating up annoying fictional characters…

7:35 pm: Left gym a sweaty, stinking mess. I sweat more than normal, dainty ladies. It’s pretty gross.

7:50 pm: Arrived home a sweaty, stinking mess. Talked to hubs, who was gentlemanly enough (for once) not to mention the stench.

8:00 pm: Shower. Because I am a SWEATY, STINKING MESS. Sing “I Can’t Get Next to You” in the shower loudly and badly. The Temptations, you guys. This song makes me way too happy.

8:30 pm: Microwaved Steamfresh noodles and veggies for dinner. I was way too lazy to cook actual food at this point.

9:00 pm: Blogged while drinking a hard cider and watching bad television.

10:00 pm: Went to bed. Read Hausfrau until eyelids were good and droopy.

11:15 pm: ZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZ… (Sorry. I snore. Part of the whole being a bear thing, I think.)

Nary a green beer to be found this year, I’m afraid. That’s what happens when you’re old and boring, I guess. My day-to-day life is pretty much like this, only a bit less interesting. And you wonder why I read so much. Living vicariously is the best.

What do your days look like, Bookworms? I don’t need minute by minute assessments, but I must admit I’m terribly curious. Fill me in!

*If you make a purchase through a link on this site, I will receive a small commission. If any of those purchases are Cadbury Mini Eggs, I expect you to share with me.*

I miss Office Beagle terribly. You’d be surprised though, when you work with a dog for 10 years they become part of the background. They’re fun to sneak little snacks to, but they tend to lie around and snore a lot, LOL.

  1. Jennine G.

I didn’t wear green either! I’ve given up on our vending machine at work. I love this kind of post! I might have to give it a try!

  2. Daddio

I found green beer! Had one for you whilst listening to an Irish band called Whiskey Brothers.

  3. Sandra @ What Lovely Books

I really like the idea about blogging a day in your life. I will probably do a weekend, since my week days consist of mind numbing work then binge watching Netflix. Tis a hard knock life I live

  4. Lindsey

Haha, I am so with you about the winter eating thing. It was even worse this week because we had the stomach bug and there’s that terrible moment where you are starting to feel better but know you shouldn’t eat yet. In that moment, every bit of food sounds like the tastiest thing ever created!!

I hope many Cadbury eggs find their way to you. 🙂

  5. Belle Wong

Your husband is right – that IS the eye of Sauron! Your Body Combat class sounds interesting, although I suspect I’d last maybe three minutes …

    • Words For Worms

Oh I’m sure you could hang in Body Combat, there are modifications for every fitness level. I’ve heard that the Nashville locals refer to it as the Batman Building, which I can also see, but the traffic was so darn sinister that the caped crusader couldn’t have been looking over us.

  6. jenn aka the picky girl

Haha! I wonder if the architect gets that comment a lot. Too funny. Love your writing style, by the way.

Love your day! I miss the days of lunches, but I also like leaving work early, so it’s a trade. I’m only *technically* supposed to work 30 hours a week because I also teach a class, and that takes additional time. But that wasn’t happening for the last two years, so I’ve enforced it since the start of the semester in January. I didn’t take lunches before either, though. Dang uni life.

    • Words For Worms

Thanks Jenn! 🙂 Yes, it’s often a trade-off between a longish lunch and leaving early (or on time, in my case!) You should definitely stick up for yourself and only work what you’re meant to work! I have the luxury of being on an hourly payscale, so if I have a massively busy time or crazy deadlines at least I get compensated for my overtime.

  7. Sarah's Book Shelves

Love Noodles & Company (I get the Thai hot pot) and Cadbury mini eggs (my kids are both getting a couple bags of those in their baskets…which I will promptly steal!)!

And – did you know sweating a lot means your body is more efficient at cooling itself? I, too, am a nasty, man-like sweater at the gym, so I googled it once 🙂 So, congrats on being super efficient at body cooling!

  8. Trish

cadbury eggggggggs. Need some now! Impressed that all you bought at Target are the eggs and scarf. I can never get out of there with few enough items to hit the express checkout.

And yes, air punching fictional characters in your head. For the win!

  9. Kay

Loved your day! You mean you didn’t get pinched for no green. Didn’t people used to get pinched? Maybe not now. Love the scarf. And that building does look like the Eye of Sauron. LOL

We are all at least 11% more than book people. 😉

    • Words For Worms

I didn’t get pinched, though I think that was because the coworker who shamed me was a dude. My friend Kathy totally would have pinched me if she was feeling pinchy, but she knew my scarf plan so it was all good.

  10. Ti

I have to tell you. I just love your personality and how it totally comes through in this post. A stinking mess… LOL!

I don’t ever have to hit snooze. I have one of those internal clocks that always wakes me up right on time. Darn it.

    • Words For Worms

It’s really not impressive, it’s just lazy. I mean, I turn the heat on full blast in my car to dry my hair (it’s super fine so it is usually mostly dry once I get there) and I keep a makeup bag in my office which I put on after I get there. I pretty much just shower, brush teeth, and throw on clothes before I run out the door.

  11. Elizabeth

I wish we had a Noodles and Company in Dallas… I am a fan of anything noodle-related. Also, all your talk about candy is making contemplate a 3rd afternoon trip to the office candy bowl…. I might be commenting hungry right now.

    • Words For Worms

Noodles and Company rocks, I’m a big fan. I hope you get one soon, but I have a feeling Dallas has all sorts of deliciousness we don’t get here in the sticks of Illinois.

  12. Katherine @ I Wish I Lived in a Library

Oh my God the AT&T building does look like the eye Sauron! We’re just south of Nashville so how have I not noticed that?? Total fail. I’m seriously impressed that you take Body Combat. I took it once and basically had to crawl out of the gym. Not one of my finer moments! Sounds like a busy day even without the green beer and I’m now adding that Heath coffee creamer to my grocery list.

    • Words For Worms

I’ve heard that the locals call it the Batman Building, but I’ve got to think Sauron has something to do with that traffic. YUCK! If it makes you feel any better, when I took my first Body Pump class I could barely walk for three days, LOL.

    • Words For Worms

Right?! I heard the guy come in and work on it, then he was all “Where’s Katie Kelly? I need to buy her a soda.” Needless to say, he didn’t ask which flavor, LOL.

  13. Caro G

Good save with the scarf! I wore green that day completely by chance because I forgot! That dog looks adorable!!! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  14. Ciska @ Ciska's Book Chest

Winter is the worst for eating all the food!! I guess it is because you spend more time around kitchens filled with food instead of outside! The puppy does look cute can imagine you miss him.

    • Words For Worms

He isn’t a puppy so much. He’s an old man dog these days, LOL. Poor geriatric, incontinent, cantankerous Dakota. I love him and his stinky 13 year old self.

  15. Akilah

I hate sweating, which is why I do water aerobics. Or yoga. I did Body Combat once, though, and it did make me feel pretty badass.

  16. Literary Feline

If it makes you feel better, I didn’t wear green that day either. My coworker loaned me a green pin to wear so no one would pinch me. 🙂 I love your accounting of your day. You have such a great sense of humor. Thank you for sharing!

  17. jilllora

I’ll bet you 10 books (yes, I said books, not bucks) that I sweat more than you. It’s disgusting, and I, too, blame my father. My mom doesn’t sweat all, which is completely unfair. You’re supposed to get girly unsweaty genes from your mother, right??

  18. Michelle

I want an office doggie! That would make my day. In fact, that would be a daily visit for me.

I’m glad you remedied your lack o’green on St. Paddy’s Day. Us girls with Irish last names have to represent!!

  19. AMB (Koiviolet)

I managed to dress all three of my kids in green on St. Patrick’s Day. Then I forgot to wear it myself. I don’t LOOK Irish, but I am almost as much Irish as I am South Asian.

I love, love, love those Cadbury mini-eggs. They’re dangerous. I can eat gobs of them without thinking about it.

Talk to me, Bookworms!
