Fellowship of the Worms Announcement: The Martian by Andy Weir

March 20, 2015 Book Club 14

Greetings Bookworms!

I think it’s about time for The Fellowship of the Worms to reconvene, don’t you? I’ve had my eye on The Martian by Andy Weir for a while now and I want to read it with you! Here’s the Goodreads synopsis:

themartianSix days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first men to walk on the surface of Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first man to die there.

It started with the dust storm that holed his suit and nearly killed him, and that forced his crew to leave him behind, sure he was already dead. Now he’s stranded millions of miles from the nearest human being, with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive–and even if he could get word out, his food would be gone years before a rescue mission could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to get him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills–and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit–he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. But will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Sounds awesome, right?! I’ll be posting discussion questions on Monday, April 20. Who’s in?!

Been waiting for a good excuse to read this. Though I’m gonna be weird and listen to the audiobook instead of reading it. We’ll see how it goes!

I have The Martian on my shelf, so I might join in! I tried reading it once but put it down after a few pages — but I want to try it again. Also, the discussion is on my birthday, so how can I say no?

What a great choice! My husband loved this book. I don’t think I’ll be able to fit it in before April 20th, but I’ll try.

Agghhh, this book is so great! I probably won’t have time to re-read, but I’ll flip through it and hopefully join in when ya’ll start posting about it 🙂
