Written in my Own Heart’s Blood by Diana Gabaldon

June 30, 2014 Historical Fiction, Romance 29

Salutations Bookworms,

If you’ve been hanging around here for any length of time, it would be impossible to miss the fact that I’m a little bit obsessed with Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Series. Funnily enough, this is the first time I’ve “reviewed” one of the major books in the series because since becoming hooked on the novels, I’ve read every new major installment the minute it was released. An Echo in the Bone was released waaaay back in 2009. That’s three years before I started this blog, if you are interested in the math. I’ve been pining for the next book for FIVE YEARS. The waiting was made all the worse because of an accursed cliffhanger. But now? I HAVE IT! Muahahahahaha!

writteninmyownheartsbloodWritten in My Own Heart’s Blood was released on June 14th. It was auto-delivered to my Kindle because OF COURSE I pre-ordered it. I spent the next week staying up too late and drinking in all the Gabaldon goodness. What can I say? This is the eighth book in the epic series and it did not disappoint!

Seeing as it was indeed the eighth book, it seems a bit silly to write a review. I mean, how can I do that without giving all sorts of spoilers for the preceding seven books? Instead, I’m just going to launch into a long, weird, fangirl rant about why you need to be reading these books. Cool?

OMG, what are you waiting for?! Gabaldon’s amazing series includes something for everyone. You like sci-fi? We’ve got time travel. You like history? Adventures in the highlands start in the 1740s. You like romance? I challenge you to find another literary love like that of Jamie and Claire. (Or Bree and Roger. Or Jenny and Ian. Or, or, or…) Interested in the medical ministrations of the past? You’ll be up to your elbows in poultices and leeches. Political maneuvering? Battle? Seafaring? For heaven’s sake, it’s all here!

You will laugh, you will cry, and you will simply fly through these chunky tomes! So go, please. Read them. Love them. Come back and talk to me about them. Oh! I almost forgot. Anybody who has finished reading Written in My Own Heart’s Blood and wants a safe place to chat about all the spoilers, I made a little Facebook group dedicated to the cause.

Tell me something good, Bookworms. How many of y’all read and love Diana Gabaldon?

Love these books. Love love love!!! And was hoping you’d say something about this one. Yay! Off to join. Your spoiler group now.

I’m almost finished with Outlander and will be running out on my lunch break to buy Dragonfly in Amber. Officially in the Outlander fandom!

Okay, here’s the thing. I read Outlander a few years ago and love, love, loved it. I got Dragonfly in Amber from the library. It was a little jarring to me that it went so far into the future but I was getting into it. And then I think somewhere around the time that Claire finds Jamie’s gravestone and it’s right next to Jonathon Randall’s, I got really upset and stopped reading it.

Reading about what Randall did to Jamie in Outlander was really difficult and upsetting to me, so to find out in the next book that there’s obviously more and he somehow ends up buried next to him for eternity… I just couldn’t stand it. 🙁

OMG I have like 300 pages left. Tomorrow is a holiday so I WILL finish!!! Doing the full series re-read was so beneficial for me. Ahhhhhhhhhh. It’s gonna be like 4-5 more years for the next (possibly last) one.

You already know of my deep and abiding obsession with this book series and the Lord John sub-series and all the novellas. I got my cousin into the series – when she’s caught up (she’s on book four right now), I’m directing her straight to the Facebook page to join our fangirling. 🙂

You got me hooked on the Outlander series and now I’ve gotten my mom hooked! 🙂 LOVE them! I haven’t gotten the new book yet as I am trying to finish up another book first. But you can bet it will be on my Kindle to read while on my beach vacation! 🙂

Tee hee! I love this! I love that your mom is into them now too! It was actually my mom who turned me on to them (and my aunt who got HER hooked.) You have to call me when you finish. Plus, you know, our Outlander date in my basement. That’s still happening right?!

    A couple questions:

    1. How many books are in the Outlanders series so far?
    2. Do we know of there are any more coming?

I really want to read this series, but my memory will not hold long enough to wait for a new book! So she’s gotta be about done with the series before I can start reading!

  8. Anne @ Lovely Literature

I really liked Outlander, but could not get through book two! I made it about 400 pages and gave up. I felt like it lost its spark. 🙁 Maybe I need to pick it back up because I heard good things about the entire series, but Dragonfly in Amber was sloooow. Maybe because Claire was hearing from Jamie a lot of the plot movement since she was, well you know.

  9. Sarah Says Read

I deleted my Facebook like 2 or 3 years ago, and I haven’t missed it even a little until now. I so wanna be on there talking about the book in your group!
