Howdy Bookworms,
I like word games. Sometimes I’ll sit and gaze at my “read” list on Goodreads and think of how books with similar titles can be so incredibly different. I thought it might be fun to come up with a list around a word, so I went and picked one. Let’s talk about WIND!
1. Gone with the Wind
by Margaret Mitchell. Mmmm historical fiction. Yeah, so I kind of wanted to smack Scarlett most of the time, but I loved this book anyway.
2. The Shadow of the Wind
by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. This is a super cool murky mystery set in Spain. It was a Fellowship of the Worms selection (you can see the discussion here) so you know it had to be good. Adding to its cool factor? It was a book about books. How can you not love that?
3. The Name of the Wind
by Patrick Rothfuss. I like some fantasy from time to time, and this is JUST my kind of fantasy adventure. Magic plus medieval-ish times plus friggin lutes? Um, yes. Yes, I will read that.
4. A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows
by Diana Gabaldon. This is a tasty little novella that fits into the Outlander universe. It’s Roger’s parents’ story. When I read it, it didn’t QUITE satisfy my Outlander craving, but really, nothing short of Jamie and Claire can do that.
Wind took us from a Spanish book mystery to Civil War era Georgia to a fantasy adventure romp to a time travel romance extravaganza. So yeah. Wind, y’all! Do you have a favorite for the Wind Collection?

Side note, some of the copy I wrote recently will be getting edited and going live…totally has “any way the wind blows” in it. Also, the same piece has “winds from the east and mist coming in” because I just had to do it.

You’re so clever, Katie. It seems like I would have had to have read a book with “wind” in the title but none come to mind at the moment. I just looked on my Kindle to see what words recurred in my “Loved It” list and I came up with “beautiful” and “light/shadow.” Also “bones” and “ghost.” LOL
Right now I’m reading the new Veronica Mars mystery “The Thousand Dollar Tan Line.” SUPER excited that it’s now a book series!

I just have to throw in Inherit the Wind the play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee about the Scopes trial. And I have The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer on my non-fiction TBR pile.
Oh, oh … you can’t leave out The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame! And A Wind in the Door by Madeleine L’Engle was part of one of my favorite series as a kid.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki is based on his amazing film.
Okay, okay, I will stop. I am desperately trying to avoid grading a midterm. This is way more fun.

You have the BEST Wind titles! I thought about A Wind in the Door, but I’ve only read A Wrinkle in Time. Same with The Wind in the Willows– I didn’t feel like I could include it because it has been sooooooooooooo long… I believe it was read to me before I could read.

I do like Gone With the Wind. First read it in Jr High and then for grad school. It’s weird though because Scarlet is the kind of character I’d usually dislike very much. Maybe it’s the sweeping “classic-ness” of it?

Scarlett did have some good moments, particularly when she was holding the crew together and rescuing them from starvation… She was at her best when downtrodden.

I noticed that The Name of the Wind was on your TBR list (a wedding gift, even from the most spectacular Capricious Reader?) It takes a little getting into, but I think you’ll dig it. It went WAY faster than I thought it would, given its girth.

Am I the only one picturing Scarlett belting out Queen? Anybody? Loved Gone with the Wind. Loved Shadow of the Wind. And you know me. I loves me some Diana Gabaldon.

Scarlett! Oh Scarlett. I wanted to smack that silly b***h most of the time too 😉 And yet, that book was incredible. It just goes to show that the character doesn’t have to be “likeable” for the book to be amazing!
