Confession Friday (on Thursday): I’m a TERRIBLE Sick Person

March 20, 2014 Confession Friday 30

Bookworms, I have a confession to make.

I am THE WORST at being sick. Seriously. The good news is I hardly ever get sick. It’s been a good 2 years since I was last felled by a cold/flu/what-have-you. But dang. This sucks. When I’m sick I want to do nothing at all. Then I want to cry because I’ve done nothing at all. I took a day off work earlier this week because I felt so miserable. And I never take time off. Crazy. Of course, I took my whining to social media, because I’m LIKE THAT.

My tweets don't lie.

My tweets don’t lie.

Here’s a rundown. I started to feel the “I might be getting sick” thing on Friday. I brushed it off and went on my merry way. My friend’s birthday was Friday, so I went bowling (and if you follow my Instagram, you’ll know what a dichotomy of horror/brilliance that was.) Saturday I felt crapalicious, so I stayed in my pajamas and laid around until about 4, when I got showered and cleaned up. I had high hopes the Mexican food I’d be eating with my friend that evening would clear out the sinuses and put me on the road to recovery, but it was not meant to be.

Dirty Kleenex: the Smallpox Blanket of 2014

Sunday I remained a whiny slug on the couch, sleeping until a million o’clock and THEN taking a nap. Who does that? I mean, except people with LEGIT illnesses, like cancer patients. (Cancer patients, y’all deserve all the sleep you can muster. I do not. Undeserving sleeper right here.) Speaking of which, I’ve never heard of a whiny cancer patient. They’re all about the positive mental attitude and I’m all “OMG, I have  a cold! Waaaaaaaaah!” More evidence that I am a horrible human being.

Red noses ARE only cute on reindeer.

I’m starting to feel better, thank heaven! This is most likely due to the fact that head colds are super minor and clear up on their own in a few days, but I’m going to give the credit to my husband (who is waaaaaaaaay less whiny when sick than I am. So much for that stereotype.) He remembered that the last time he was sick, I went out and picked up some pseudoephedrine. The REAL stuff they keep behind the counter and put you in the meth suspicion database for. Best idea ever.

Take THAT, nose!

In summation, I’m a huge whiny baby and a pretty awful person. At least I’m honest… I guess? Anybody else out there want to admit to being a weenie when sick?

Hope you feel better soon. I am not terribly whiny when sick, but I do tend to get moody.

I had surgery 3 weeks ago (not sure if you knew) and was at home for 2 weeks. The first week after surgery was HORRIBLE. Not because I’m whiny or a baby, but it truly was painful, uncomfortable and I got so depressed. So I got whiny on twitter….

  2. Quirky Chrissy

Cancer patients complain too. It’s just a different kind of complaint.

I’m a pretty bad sick person too…except when you’re sick all the time, you learn to moan and groan a little less. Because no one feels sorry for you when there’s something wrong every other week.

I took yesterday off and still feel ack…but I feel like I have to go to work today. Itchy eyes, aching body and all.

Oh No! You are not the WORST sick person. My husband is. I swear when he gets sick he divides his age by 40. And multiplies his complaining by 5Million. I’m sorry feel like poop. I’m also sorry your nose has declared war, and the rest of your body is joining the march against you! NOT GOOD! I hope you feel better soon! xx

Take heart my friend, for I am an exTREMEly whiny person when sick as well. And I get sick ALL. THE. TIME.

I totally blame it on the kiddos.

Hope you’re feeling better soon! Now I’m off to look up said bowling pictures.

Oh yeah, kids are super germy what with the schools and the daycares and the not quite understanding the importance of hand washing thing… Something to look forward to… I guess? LOL. Oh I totally bowled a 139 AND hit a strike when the red pin was in front TWICE. I won $8 worth of cash and prizes.

I feel like you have given me permission to whine. I’ve been sick with bronchitis for almost 3 weeks. I feel miserable. I don’t have a job but i am neglecting my family. I’m sleeping about 16 hours a day and i have the worst earache. I just want to be better again. Whew. I feel a little better already.

I’m not exactly whiny when I’m sick, I just get really angry!

I really rarely get anything OTC, just the old standbys of tea, honey, chicken broth, sleep, a little movement (not good to stay still too long while sick!), humidifier nearby, and time. I have absolutely no qualms about taking sick days off from work. That’s what they’re for, and no one likes to be around a sicky at work!

OMG I hate getting sick. Colds don’t bug me and typically I Vitamin C the hell out of my system and just get over it. Sore Throat? I’m done! But I’m the stoic sick person. I will hide under blankets and typically snarl at people who nag me. I want to be taken care of in theory but the only person who ever tried was my mother and she just annoyed the hell out of me and had the uncanny ability of knocking on my door the SECOND I started to doze off.

For the record I haven’t taken a sick day since October 2011. And that was because when I came home from England I brought an awesome case of Bronchitis with me.

    • Words For Worms

Seriously! I’d forgotten how awesome it was because I’m lazy and don’t want to have to jump through hoops for a decongestant. So worth it!

I feel you, because not being able to breathe through your nose is THE WORST. But what’s really the worst is when you’re a mom, nobody “lets” you be sick. Dad can whine and lay on the couch and nap and no one cares. But not Mommy. Mommy still needs to DO things for them. And cook dinner. I’m getting angry just thinking about it.

And then if you’re PREGNANT, you can’t take anything! (I am, BTW, I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned it here before.) I hope I don’t get sick. Ugh.

    • Words For Worms

Way to bury the lead, MEGAN! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! When are you due? Do we know if the tiny human will be male or female? Are you opposed to naming your child Katie? SO MUCH EXCITEMENT!

      • Megan M.

Thank you Katie. 🙂 I’m due in September and we have a few more weeks to go before we can find out if it’s a boy or girl. The name Katie/Kate/Katherine is lovely, but unfortunately it doesn’t quite go with our established naming pattern. Hope you feel better soon!

Now I’m wondering if we are related. I just went through this and gladly handed over my driver’s license to get my hands on the meth level Sudafed. I also went through the stages of grief you did- but went one further and got so angry (after crying) that I was stamping my foot in rage at being this sick. Amazing isn’t it, what massive levels of snot can do to your brain. In fact, I’m pretty sure some of it got up in there and is still mucking things up for me. Feel better soon!

  10. Psychobabble

    I’m pretty similar.
Don’t get sick often at all, but when I do, it’s a doozy.
If I can’t breathe through my nose, you’ll hear about it.

  11. Charleen

I was sort of sick earlier this week? (That doesn’t sound like it should be a question, but it totally is. I don’t even know what was going on.) Anyway, I’m a super whiny sick person too. Glad you’re starting to feel better!

  12. Joules (from Pocketful of Joules)

I am not whiny when I’m sick, which is why I accidentally went to work with a stomach bug/food poisoning/stomach flu a couple weeks ago. Travis, however, is a super whiny head.

BTW, I know from experience that pharmacists don’t like it when you request the “special sudafed that people use to make meth”. I mean, that’s what I WANTED (not to make meth, to actually help with my cold), but they kinda frown on that. Just saying.

  13. Kelly from Readlately.com

Feel better! I hate having no energy when I’m sick. It’s such a change from the everyday when I’m just doing, doing, doing. That’s the most frustrating thing, I think. And even if it’s just a head cold it takes a good week to go away!

  14. Rory

I am a good sick person. I hate it, but I am pretty functional. you know what cured my whiny sick self? Children. I don’t know whether to be thankful or resentful. Everyone deserves a nap on the couch from time to time.

Talk to me, Bookworms!
