Hello my Bookworms! I hope you’re having a glorious Tuesday. I’m back on the meme bandwagon today and participating in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday with The Broke and the Bookish! Today’s topic is… Settings I’d Like To See More Of. Shall we?
1. I want to see more books set at THE CIRCUS! I loved The Night Circus and Water For Elephants. They’re just rife for interesting stories. Circuses, please!
2. SCOTLAND. I really like reading Scottish accents. Plus I have a giant book crush on Jamie from the Outlander series.
3. Let’s do the TIME WARP again! I can’t get enough of people accidentally going back in time. I’m a sucker for it. I routinely inventory my skills to assess how I’d do in the past. The verdict? Not well at all. It’s a good thing reality has very little influence on my imagination.
4. THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS. Why? Oh I don’t know. Darwin. Science. There are penguins there… It’s much warmer than Antarctica. Did I mention there are penguins there?
5. HABERDASHERY. Nobody writes books about people who make hats. Hats are cool. Someone out there needs to remedy this problem. Books about hat stores!
6. BIBLICAL TIMES. I love me some historical fiction, but I was especially struck with the awesomeness that was The Red Tent. I love reading about women’s lives in various points in history, and this time period is under represented.
7. ANCIENT GREECE. Song of Achilles rocked my world pretty hard. More of this, please.
8. FARMS. Yes, farms. I enjoyed reading Kent Haruf’s books and learning a little something about giving a cow anal palpation to detect pregnancy. I like to learn things!
9. NORTH DAKOTA. Someone needs to throw North Dakota a bone. It’s like the black sheep of states. At least South Dakota gets Rushmore. North Dakota’s claim to fame? Being next to Minnesota. I feel for you, underdog state!
10. FRED FLINTSTONE’S DINING ROOM. I let Jim choose this last one because I was running out of ideas. So. Yeah. More books about cartoon cavemen and their dinner parties. In fairness, this was his third choice. The first was Zombie Infested Prison because he’s going through Walking Dead withdrawal. His second choice was “between the pages of a Cisco router manual,” and just typing out that phrase I went unconscious. So yep.
What about you, bookworms? Where would you like to see more books set?
Heather
I am all about books set in Scotland… or Wales…. or Ireland for that matter. Basically, anything where I can read, and imagine the fabulous accents in my head and pick up some new vocabulary is good. I read the UK edition of Harry Potter just so I could compare words 🙂
Words for Worms
Haha! I love that you read dueling Harry Potters!
CorrieP
I’m with you on historical fiction. I’m currently reading the Marshal series by Elizabeth Chadwick and am totally in love with them. On the time travel note, Jen Lancaster had a new book coming our this month called Here I Go Again about returning to high school *shudder* in the 80’s. I will preach her til I die because she is pee-your-pants funny. Happy reading!
Words for Worms
Oh noooo I don’t want to go back to high school!
ashley
Middle Earth? Hahaha. Can you tell what book I’m reading?
Words for Worms
Niiiice. I still haven’t started LOTR. I’m a chicken. And a procrastinator.
Quirky Chrissy
Do it.
Words for Worms
Meeeeh.
Megan M.
Scotland FTW! What is it about Scotland? I don’t know, but I want to read about it. And Jamie is one of the dreamiest men I have ever read about. Period.
My favorite setting is one that includes a mysterious old house/mansion/castle that may or may not have been abandoned and is full of secrets. I eat those up with a spoon.
Words for Worms
Scotland… Sigh. The dudes in kilts. I really think that’s it. Mysterious old castles and such are a good time!

Ok, I think I would read ANYTHING having to do with dinner parties. I love the whole ambiance of fine China, wine, conversation…..If you have suggestions please share.
As far as historical fiction, Cleopatra’ s daughter was wonderful. I really think you would like that. My book club read that one. Not necessarily Biblical times but kinda.
I can recommend a romance/time travel book, not only going back in time but a modern day story with lots of magic and transcending timelines and such…..Illusion by Frank Peretti. I should finish that one today.
Words for Worms
Oooh thanks for the suggestions! I can’t think of any good dinner party stories off the top of my head… But perhaps I’ll delve into fiction and write some caveman dinner party conversation…
Liesel Hill
Great list! I read the Old Testament cover to cover in 2011 and LOVED it! I would totally love to write some histfic in that era, but I think it would take a lot of research. Not that it turns me off, but I won’t have the time for awhile. ;D
My TTT.
Words for Worms
Oh I wouldn’t worry about the historical fiction- dystopias are all the rage these days.
Alley
Aww I was going to say ‘North Dakota? Why?” but I like your reasoning. Poor forgotten ND.
Words for Worms
LOL serioulsy! North Dakota. Poor state.
Daddio
Bartholomew Cubbins!!! Hats for months, and elaborate ones too!
Words for Worms
Thanks Old Man! I’d forgotten about the Seuss!
Lucy
What a fun list! Hat stores – love it! There is a hat store in the Parasol Protectorate series in fact. And I’d like to read more books set in Scotland too.
Words for Worms
Parasol Protectorate? I rather like the sound of that.
Jess Schira
I agree with the need for more (realistic) literary farms. I’ll have to check out the Kent Haruf books.
Words for Worms
The Haruf books are a little more about small town living, but plenty of ranch-farm goodness to be had!
therelentlessreader
I know of another circus book but I cannot remember the title for the life of me. Ugh! I’ll think on it and get back to you if it ever shakes loose from my cruddy memory!
Words for Worms
Is it Geek Love by chance? Because that is all up in my radar!
therelentlessreader
No! But I remembered it, finally. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9689093-the-autobiography-of-mrs-tom-thumb
Words for Worms
Oh thank you! This looks like just the circus ticket!
Quirky Chrissy
Water for Elephants made me want to go to the circus.
kelley
Fun post and a Great list. I enjoy a well used setting in a book. kelley—the road goes ever ever on
Sarah Says Read
Yesssss for Scotland! I wanna go there. And yay for cool nerdy stuff like the Galapagos Islands and Ancient Greece and yeah, even cavemen’s dinner parties!
I miss that show Cavemen. Which really doesn’t have anything to do with this post, except that I thought it was funny and I’m sad it got cancelled. So yeah, a book version of that would be cool.
Words for Worms
Hahahaha! I work in TV/Radio, and we used to bet every year on what show would be cancelled first out of the new fall lineup. Nobody expected Cavemen to last longer than two episodes, so cherish the extras you got 🙂
Krystianna
I’m in love with Time Travel novels! They are so much fun and I can never get enough of them. 🙂
Krystianna @ Downright Dystopian
Words for Worms
Time travel! So many options for fun twists!
Alice in Readerland
I’d love to see more books set in the Galapagos Islands! 🙂 My TTT list: http://aliceinreaderland.wordpress.com/2013/01/21/settings/

Words for Worms
And who wouldn’t?! I mean. Galapagos. It’s even fun to say!
Lyssapants
3. Time Traveler’s Wife was SOOO GOOD. Maybe people should go back in time to a haberdashery in Scotland. *drool*
Words for Worms
I loved the Time Traveler’s Wife! Lyssa, I think you and I should go to Scotland and open a hat store. Yes?
Lyssapants
Yes!!! And I need to find Ewan McGregor, because he’s the future father of my babies. One of them. One of many.
Quirky Chrissy
Yes! So good!
lucysfootball
Ooh, you will love “Geek Love.”
Also, yes yes yes on Jamie Fraser. Such a crush. SUCH a crush. Sigh.
Words for Worms
I hadn’t heard of it until I read your Death Match on Insatiable Booksluts. Now I MUST! I MUST HAVE MORE CIRCUS!
It's A Dome Life
How are there not endless books with stories revolving around circus life? Or penguins?
Glad you are conscious again. The Cisco Router Maunal would probably knock me out too.
Words for Worms
BRILLIANT IDEA: Book about a penguin circus. And so it shall be! You want to illustrate?
June
North Dakota never gets any love! Probably because most people associate it with what they saw in the movie Fargo. Somehow northern hillbillies are never considered as charming as southern hillbillies.
